What Is A Doula?
A Childbirth Doula is a non-medical birth professional who provides compassionate emotional, educational, and physical support before, during, and after childbirth. Before labor, doulas provide educational and emotional support as your family prepares for your new baby's arrival, they answer any questions you have about the labor process and provide access to unbiased information to help you prepare to make important decisions about your care and the care of your new baby. During labor and delivery you and your partner will receive continuous physical, emotional, and educational support at home and/or at the hospital. Physical support can include comfort measures and positional changes and is personalized to your exact wants and needs. This is unlike any care you will receive from a nurse, ob/gyn, or midwife, who cannot usually stay by your side through the entire labor process. Once baby is born a doula will continue to support you and answer questions while you bond with baby and establish breastfeeding, pumping, or bottle feeding. After discharge your doula will check on you and answer any additional questions about newborn care, postpartum healing, or your birth experience as well as provide any physical support you may need. Additional postpartum services can be purchased to help you with you daily transition into parenthood.
This type of support has been proven to reduce the amount of interventions, cesareans, and pain relief needed during labor. Families who hire a doula are more likely to be satisfied with the birth experience, have babies who are less likely to need special care nursery stays, and breastfeed longer.
